Optical imaging through clouds and fog
نویسندگان
چکیده
Imaging and detection of objects at optical wavelengths offers better resolution than at microwave or millimeter wavelengths. However, the imaging is severely affected by scattering from fog and clouds. This paper presents a study of optical imaging through clouds by using the point-source vector radiative transfer theory. The point-spread function including complete polarization characteristics is presented with numerical examples at 1 m wavelength showing the effects of aperture size and optical depth on the shower curtain effects.

Prediction of drop size distribution parameters for optical wireless communications through moderate continental fog
Wireless Optical Communication Links (OCL), or Free Space Optics (FSO) links involving optical ground stations (OGS) are highly influenced by the earth atmosphere due to the interaction of the optical wave with particles of different size and shape. Fog, clouds, rain and snow cause significant signal attenuation thus limiting the performance of OCL. In this paper, we consider the behavior of OC...
متن کاملDetection of ground fog in mountainous areas from MODIS (Collection 051) daytime data using a statistical approach
The mountain cloud forest of Taiwan can be delimited from other forest types using a map of the ground fog frequency. In order to create such a frequency map from remotely sensed data, an algorithm able to detect ground fog is necessary. Common techniques for ground fog detection based on weather satellite data cannot be applied to fog occurrences in Taiwan as they rely on several assumptions r...
متن کاملSpace-time-polarization Optical Imaging through Clouds
This paper first discusses the optical scattering characteristics of clouds including water droplets and ice crystals. We then present the time-dependent vector radiative transfer theory making use of the Stokes vector, Mueller matrix and extinction matrix. In particular, we discuss the advantages of circular polarization over linear polarization. Next, we present imaging formulations including...
متن کاملCharacterization of Fog and Snow Attenuations for Free-Space Optical Propagation
Free Space Optics (FSO) is now a well established access technology, better known for its robustness in transmitting large data volumes in an energy efficient manner. However the BER performance of a FSO ground-link is adversely affected by cloud coverage, harsh weather conditions, and atmospheric turbulence. Fog, clouds and dry snow play a detrimental role by attenuating optical energy transmi...
متن کاملEffect of fog on free-space optical links employing imaging receivers.
We analyze free-space optical links employing imaging receivers in the presence of misalignment and atmospheric effects, such as haze, fog or rain. We present a detailed propagation model based on the radiative transfer equation. We also compare the relative importance of two mechanisms by which these effects degrade link performance: signal attenuation and image blooming. We show that image bl...
